What Is A Wrapped Newborn Photography Session?

What Is a Wrapped Newborn Photography Session?

I get asked this question quite often as “wrapped newborn photography session” is on my list of Services on my website.  It’s quite simple actually.

If you’ve ever seen those dreamy, cozy newborn photos where the baby looks snug as a bug in a soft blanket, you’ve already had a glimpse into what a wrapped newborn session is all about. These sessions focus on keeping your baby comfortable, calm, and beautifully posed while being gently swaddled in wraps designed just for newborn photography.

The Art of Wrapping

During a wrapped session, your baby is carefully and safely wrapped using stretchy, breathable fabrics that mimic the snug feeling of the womb. This helps your little one feel secure and settled—often leading to those sweet, sleepy expressions parents love.

There’s an art to wrapping—tight enough to feel safe, but always gentle and mindful of baby’s comfort. Every wrap is done with your baby’s safety as the top priority.  More often than not, my clients tell me they want to take me home just so I can wrap their baby up just like I swaddle them in their sessions.  While I am highly honored that they value me for my skills, I always tell them that these particular wrapping styles are meant for short periods only.  There are so many factors to consider when wrapping a baby, for their safety, and I am happy to explain them to you in detail if you would like to contact me.  Bottom line, MAKE SURE YOU HIRE AN EXPERIENCED NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER WHO KNOWS THE SAFETY IN THE ART OF WRAPPING!

Why Choose a Wrapped Session?

A wrapped newborn session is perfect for:

  • Babies who prefer to stay cozy: Some little ones don’t love being undressed or moved too much, so being wrapped keeps them calm and content.  There have many times where we have had to resort in mainly wrapped poses during a “full newborn session” because of this.

  • Shorter sessions: Wrapped sessions tend to move more smoothly and quickly, which can be a great option for parents who want beautiful portraits without a longer time commitment.  Because of this, these sessions are a little less expensive.

  • Younger or older newborns: Even if your baby is past the typical “newborn window,” wrapped poses can still work beautifully.  Sometimes people miss the desired time frame for newborn session (7-14 days after birth) and will contact me when baby is 3-4 weeks old.  I often explain that we will try all the newborn poses when booking a Studio Newborn Session but the fact is, babies stay awake longer and have adjusted to their world more during this older period.  Because of that, we often have to rely on swaddling to keep baby safe and from flailing their limps while in props.

What to Expect During Your Session

When you arrive, you’ll notice that the selected wraps and coordinating accessories fit the look and vibe of the studio (the reason most people hire me)—think soft neutrals or rich earthy tones. Your baby will be wrapped and photographed in a few different styles and positions—sometimes on a blanket, in a basket, or nestled in a prop.

Throughout the session, I’ll work patiently and gently, following your baby’s cues. The goal is always to create a calm, soothing experience for both baby and parents.

The Result: Timeless, Heart-Melting Portraits

Wrapped newborn photos have a way of highlighting just how tiny and precious your baby is in those first few weeks. Every image captures the innocence, peace, and beauty of new life in a soft, timeless style that never goes out of fashion.

Whether you love a minimal, neutral look or something more styled and creative, a wrapped session is the perfect way to remember your baby’s earliest days—safe, cozy, and full of love.

You’ll find plenty more examples on the rest of my blog and  IG page as well!
