Benji’s Eight Month Photography Session

Benji arrived at the Jen Jacobowitz Photography studio in Short Pump all smiles and ready for his eight month photography session. He’s a little ham and I love it. He has quickly become one of my favorite little people on earth. Seriously. This is our third session together. I never want to let him go when it’s time for him to leave. I am so glad that his mom opted for the one year plan. It has been an absolute delight to watch this little boy grow!

I also very happy that Holly, his mother, decided to get in a few pictures with him. So many times us mothers are the ones taking the photos. It is so good to have a nice picture with our sweethearts. I will always encourage you to jump in.

Milestone Photography Sessions

I’ve talked about the importance of Milestone photography sessions before. I can not stress it enough. It doesn’t matter if you do it at 4 months, 6 months, 8 month or a year old. Just do it. These little love bugs grow and change so fast. My oldest son doesn’t look a thing like he did when he was a baby. Even at the age of three he looked completely different. I can’t even find the 5 year old in him now. He’s 15.

Actually, some of my favorite photographs happen when they don’t.
When they run. When they laugh. When they wiggle. When they stop to pick up a leaf. When they climb into your lap. When they forget I’m even there.
I don’t need your toddler to behave perfectly or your family to spend an hour smiling at my camera.
I want to see your family as you actually are.
Because years from now, I don’t think you’ll miss the perfectly posed photograph nearly as much as you’ll miss the way your little one used to run into your arms, the sound of their laugh, or how tiny they looked holding your hand.
Those are the moments I want to preserve for you.
And yes...I’ll still get the beautiful portraits where everyone is looking at the camera, too. 😉

Your kids don’t have to sit still for family photos. 🤎
Actually, some of my favorite photographs happen when they don’t.

The good news? You don’t need everyone in matching outfits or head-to-toe fall colors to have beautiful, cohesive family photos.
I’m a big believer in coordinating instead of matching—mixing soft, earthy colors with different textures and pieces that actually feel like your family.
Think: 🤎 warm browns 🤍 creams 🌿 soft olive 🍂 rust 🩵 muted blue 👖 denim
Then add in a cozy sweater, corduroy, a knit hat, linen, lace, or even a soft blanket to give your images a little more depth and texture.
And because we’re in Richmond, VA, there’s one more thing to consider: the weather. Fall here can mean crisp and beautiful one minute and completely unpredictable the next. Your outfits should be beautiful—but they also need to work with whatever October decides to throw at us. 😉
