Straight Outta NICU: Lux’s Baby Photography Session

Meet Lux. This is the story of his baby photography session.  This super cuddly, cheeks for days, precious baby has had a rough start to life. Like many of us, 2020 has thrown him and his family some curve balls. For starters, Lux’s entry into this world was a bit early. Though things seemed fine at first, complications quickly came about. His sweet mom, who I had the privilege of photography a maternity session for, had excitedly emailed me as soon as he was born to get his newborn session scheduled. Unfortunately, she had to email me again a few days later to let me know that he was in NICU. She would contact me in a week or so when he was out, she said. I checked in on Lux and his mom a few times over the next several weeks.  Each time, I  learn each time that he would still remain in NICU.

What Happens If My Baby Has To Stay In NICU?

Likely, you’ve heard that a newborn baby photography session is best done 7-14 days after birth.  Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances such as a NICU stay.

Many weeks passed and I honestly believed that there was so much going on in Lux’s family that a newborn session simply had to take a backseat and they had likely moved on. THAT would be completely understandable. I resolved to the fact that the session would not happen and simply hoped to meet him sometime down the road for a Milestone Session. Imagine how surprised I was when his mom contacted me 9 weeks after his birth to let me know he had just been released from the NICU and was ready for his session. I was shocked to learn he had been in there all that time and even more surprised to find out that a newborn session was still on their list of things to do. I JOYFULLY welcomed little Lux into the studio!

What a precious gift this baby is. He is so calm and sweet. His eyes stayed open for a good part of our session but he never fussed or squirmed. At 9+ lbs he was as squishy as they came and it took everything in me to not pinch those adorable cheeks! Lux has some challenges ahead of him, and ones that he faces everyday but you would never know my his relaxed , docile personality. His demeanor is happy and his little face exudes love. Welcome to the world, little Lux! We are ALL so very happy you are here!
