Preparing For A Successful Newborn Photoshoot

I’m often asked, “Can you give us any tips for preparing for a successful newborn photoshoot?”  The answer: ABSOLUTELY!  Before your newborn session I send out a prep email detailing ways you can prepare to help get baby sleepy and what to expect in the studio.  While this is not my detailed email, the info below contains great tips to ensuring you have a memorable and successful newborn photoshoot.

Tips for a Successful Newborn Photoshoot:

  1. Timing is Key: The ideal time to photograph newborns is within the first two weeks of life when they are still sleepy and more easily posed. When you inquire with me I will let you know that this is when we will schedule the photoshoot after baby’s arrival to capture those adorable curled-up poses.newborn photoshoot baby pose
  2. A Comfortable Environment: Babies are sensitive to their surroundings, so it’s essential to create a warm, cozy, and safe environment for the photoshoot. I keep my studio warm and use soft blankets, wraps, outfits, soft natural lighting, and soothing baby susher sounds to help keep the baby calm and comfortable.  I always tell my clients in their prep email “dress accordingly for the warm studio.”
  3. Be Patient and Flexible: Newborns can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to approach the photoshoot with patience and flexibility. Be prepared to take breaks for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing the baby as needed.  Please allow up to three hours for my studio newborn session.  I’ve been called a “baby whisperer” more times than I can count.  Don’t worry, I’m here to soothe your baby and give you the much needed break you deserve.  I believe that knowing what to expect during your session creates more relaxed parents and a happier baby.newborn photoshoot soothing baby
  4. Get In the Picture!: Don’t be afraid Mamas!  I know you aren’t feeling exactly like you did 10 months ago.  You’ve hardly slept since baby arrived.  I get it.  Trust me, Mama, you’re going to want these images with your precious new baby.  You may not know HOW much you want these images until you see them.  So do what you need to do to make yourself feel pretty.  Don’t worry about what to wear.  I’ve got you covered.  parents and newborn photoshoot
  5. Embrace Candid Moments: While posed portraits are beautiful, don’t overlook the beauty of candid moments. Some of the most heartwarming images I capture are the genuine interactions between parents and their newborns, as well as each other, showcasing the love and connection between them.newborn photoshoot candid moment
  6. Incorporate Meaningful Props: Personalize the photoshoot by incorporating meaningful heirlooms that hold sentimental value to the family. Whether it’s a favorite toy, a handmade blanket, or a family heirloom, these will add a special touch to the photoshoot.  As much as I love incorporating these things, please share a picture with me of the item(s) you wish to bring so I can set up accordingly.  newborn photoshoot with heirloom props
