I didn’t start out as a lifestyle newborn photographer. In fact, for years the idea scared me. However, over my seven year span of being a professional photographer, I have certainly evolved and grown. With that growth, my style has changed. I offer plenty of traditional newborn posing. You will see that in the images below. However, the family portion, my favorite part, of the sessions has changed. As I’ve grown into a lifestyle newborn photographer, I’ve done away with my paper backdrops and, instead, use the homey vibe of the studio to play as the backdrop. My clients seem so much more relaxed this way which produces gorgeous, heartfelt images. Everyone who walks in the studio immediately falls in love with the decor, tones and vibe.

I’ve had the honor of capturing so many amazing milestones in this gorgeous families life, from their first pregnancy to the arrival of their second baby boy! I’m so grateful to be walking along side them as their family grows! I love seeing them for their yearly pictures and milestones.

When mom reached out for her second maternity session, I could’t wait to use the newly remodeled studio as the backdrop to her session. I knew she would want those earthy warm tones which is perfect because those are such a big part of my brand. I so glad she is always willing to trust my vision. These lifestyle image just pull at my heart strings! Rhyse’s newborn session was perfect! Everything about this little angle was perfection. He slept so well for me during his session. I love the cohesiveness we were able to capture throughout the different parts of the session. The way his sweet big brother loved on him made my heart melt.

Actually, some of my favorite photographs happen when they don’t.
When they run. When they laugh. When they wiggle. When they stop to pick up a leaf. When they climb into your lap. When they forget I’m even there.
I don’t need your toddler to behave perfectly or your family to spend an hour smiling at my camera.
I want to see your family as you actually are.
Because years from now, I don’t think you’ll miss the perfectly posed photograph nearly as much as you’ll miss the way your little one used to run into your arms, the sound of their laugh, or how tiny they looked holding your hand.
Those are the moments I want to preserve for you.
And yes...I’ll still get the beautiful portraits where everyone is looking at the camera, too. 😉

Your kids don’t have to sit still for family photos. 🤎

Fall family photos are coming, and if you’re anything like most of my families, the first question is probably:
“What are we going to wear?” 😂
The good news? You don’t need everyone in matching outfits or head-to-toe fall colors to have beautiful, cohesive family photos.
I’m a big believer in coordinating instead of matching—mixing soft, earthy colors with different textures and pieces that actually feel like your family.
Think: 🤎 warm browns 🤍 creams 🌿 soft olive 🍂 rust 🩵 muted blue 👖 denim
Then add in a cozy sweater, corduroy, a knit hat, linen, lace, or even a soft blanket to give your images a little more depth and texture.
And because we’re in Richmond, VA, there’s one more thing to consider: the weather. Fall here can mean crisp and beautiful one minute and completely unpredictable the next. Your outfits should be beautiful—but they also need to work with whatever October decides to throw at us. 😉
